I feel blessed that I was able to see such a great film. Imagine we were only 8, I guess, in the premiere seats, much fewer when I watched Adaptation. Nowhere in Africa is a German film, 2002 Oscar’s best foreign film. It began by showing the beautiful lanscapes of Africa. Great cinematography! It is about a Jewish family who abandoned their home in Germany for a remote farm in Kenya, to save their lives from the hands of the Nazis. The husband worked as a farm manager in Kenya. The wife had a trouble adjusting to her new world but their daughter adjusted quickly. The kid learned to love the culture of Africa and had formed a bonding with their African cook. The marriage soon became a problem when the war broke out and the wife committed adultery to secure their home. In the end of the film the wife learned to love Africa and refused to leave it for new opportunities in Germany.
Though the film is very long, 2 1/2 hours to be exact, I didnt get bored. I even find myself absorbed by the film. The music soars really high. The actors are superb. Wish I can understand German though. And the sex scenes are very sensual.
Among the characters I particulary like the family’s cook, aside from the daughter named Regina. You cant just help but like that man of wisdom and loyalty. Moreover, it’s amazing how a film which refuses to offer life’s questions makes you even like it.
Judgment: Intelligent, thrilling, lovely, marvelous! Truly one of the best films of 2002.
