…so uttered by GMA on her 7th SONA.
My favorite columnist Conrado de Quiros had an interesting and highbrow comment on that statement.
“…Which raises the question: If you would rather be right than popular, who determines what is right? Last I looked, in a democracy it was the people who determined what was right — not least who should be their president. Last I looked, in a democracy it was the leader who followed the will of the people and not the people who obeyed the whim of their president — even a real one. But then and now, you wondered if you were looking at a democracy.”

salamat sa pagbisita sa brainfreeze. link ex?
CDQ is also my favorite columnist. Although he comes across as too anti-GMA. Parang wala nang nagawang matino si GMA (mayroon naman kahit kokonti diba). It’s just that when one focuses too much on the negative side, lumilitaw na close-minded.
But don’t get me wrong. I didn’t vote for GMA. Neither do I think GMA is right on most of her decisions, especially on Education. Sa ecomony, no comment na lang ako, hindi ko naman forte ang economics eh..

I sort of disagree with this. That’s the problem with democrazy..este democracy pala.
I remember the time during Erap’s reign. There were proposing to strictly implement waste segregation but many had qualms… “matrabaho raw kasi at maaksaya sa pera”. I personally practice segregation and it isn’t tedious. Filipinos are just lazy. If ever there had been some election whether to implement it or not and the No vote won, should the government follow it?
What if nagprotesta sa buong Pilipinas sa pagkadisbar ni Comm. Eala? Hey, he was involved in such an immoral act, an illicit affair… Dapat ba nga siyang ibalik sa bar?
It’s not that I’m anti-democracy but for true democracy to work, people should be responsible enough.
I don’t believe that Filipinos are not educated when it comes to responsibilities. The problem with Filipinos is that many choose to be irresponsible. You see, saan ka pa nakakita ng mga taong tumatawid sa ILALIM ng overpass.
What the Philippines need is not a leader who will follow the “people” but who has a strong sense of morality.
AWAKE!
Our nation is in the path of gradual destruction wrought by the worms and maggots in government who do nothing but live off the carcass of rotten politics. The people feel betrayed and desperate, yet numbed by the pervading atmosphere of helplessness.
We have two choices.
One is to live in pretense and self-delusion. We can build careers and earn money. We can think only within the limited interests of the family and be convinced that matters beyond that neither concern nor affect us. Indeed, we can relax in the false comfort of that grey twilight which knows not the distinction between a great future and a meaningless life.
Or, we can build a nation that will nurture, promote and protect the historical aspirations of our people for decent living in a humane and just society free of exploitation and deceit. We can start to realize that nothing that we do for ourselves and our families will ever bear fruit in a nation laid barren and parched through decades of plunder and corruption.
