The King of Horror

It’s Halloween and it’s the  day I honor one of my favorite contemporary writers, the undisputed king of horror himself-Stephen King. He’s the first author I loved! As they say, first love never dies (lol).

King has never been a favorite of critics. They always claim that he or his catalog does not belong to literature. They may be right but they can’t deny that King is a master storyteller. Why, there are dozens of films made from his writings! He surely has a great talent in scaring people and making his readers attached to his characters. I remember crying like a baby after I finished reading “It”.

Here’s a list of his books that I’ve read for the past 10 years or so:

  • Carrie- ♣♣♣♣. King’s first novel. The movie was critically acclaimed, I should see it.
  • The Dark Half- ♣♣♣♣♣
  • The Green Mile- ♣♣♣♣. I think this is one of the best, if not the best, books written by King. I so love the film, starring Tom Hanks. A must-see!
  • It- ♣♣♣♣ My favorite. Just don’t watch the film.
  • Needful Things-♣♣♣♣♣
  • The Shining- ♣♣♣♣
  • The Tommyknockers- ♣♣♣♣♣. Could be a great alien film if made.
  • The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger- ♣♣♣♣
  • Four Past Midnight- ♣♣♣♣♣. I love the first story, The Langoriers. But I read the film was poorly made. The second story Secret Window, Secret Garden was made into a film as well starring Johnny Depp but I haven’t seen it yet.

P.S. The Shining was the first book I read. The last was It.

  1. The Langoliers is a great story. The film was okay, but films will almsot always fail to live up to a book, becasue your imagination is so much more powerful than a film-makers ability to portray it. Toomy knockers was made into a mini series I think, Ive heard its not good.
I think my favourite two King novels must be It and Tommyknockers. The Stand was a great TV Movie, pretty true to the book I think. Ive always wondered why Kings novels suffer less on the screen than Dean Koontz’s. I love Koonntzs books, but theres never been a successful film adaptation.
