Contrary to popular belief, Titanic is not the highest-grossing film of all time. That is if we will adust the ticket price inflation (which we definitely should to be technically correct.)
This is really mind-boggling (at least to me). It was 1939, the last year of the Great Depression- the period of extreme poverty, unemployment, starvation that affected the entire world. It was the “Great Depression”. There were significantly fewer people. The world population then was around 2 Billion (thank you wikipedia). Hollywood is not known around the world. Globalization was never heard of. It was the time without internet, the time that relied solely on the power of the word of mouth.
But then again, GWTW has been released many times. That could explain its magic partly. But still to quote IMDB, “If the number of total admissions are calculated, this is the most popular movie of all time in the US. While having the advantage of being released several times in theaters, the shocking thing is that there were half as many Americans alive when it was released, compared with Titanic (1997), Star Wars (1977) and Jaws (1975).”
Yes, my dear, Gone With the Wind, 68 years after its first release, is still standing strong, undefeated!

Gone With The Wind (1939) is often considered the most beloved, enduring and popular film of all time.

Gone with the wind, meron ba satin to? San makakabili? may copy ka?
I don’t think so. I haven’t seen one. I’m planning to buy the 4-disc DVD online. You can check out the DVD commercial in my video collection (right column)
I’ve become obsessed with GWTW after reading it.
antique haha. i bet you havent seen the commercial yet. (check out the video pod) all dvds are affordable naman.
we need a “tickets sold” chart for better results.
One thing I don’t understand with box office in the US. Why not stick to tickets sold (like they do in France), instead of the highly inaccurate method of money made?
It would be interesting to see how much GWTW made after 5 years, or 10 years. The latest movies, do not have the advantage of being re-released. Plus when the numbers get adjusted for inflation do they take into account that GWTW has been re-released over and over again at obviously different ticket prices?
I agree with you. But I guess it’s difficult now to get the figures of tickets sold for old/classic movies.
According to this site http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-2472
“GWTW, in its first run the film played for slightly more than two years and was seen by more than 25 million viewers. Many more have seen it in subsequent releases.
It is probable that more people have seen Gone With the Wind than any other film ever made.”
And according to IMDB “If the number of total admissions are calculated, this is the most popular movie of all time in the US. While having the advantage of being released several times in theaters, the shocking thing is that there were half as many Americans alive when it was released, compared with Titanic (1997), Star Wars (1977) and Jaws (1975).”
