Beowulf (2007)
I can’t remember if we have discussed Beowulf during high school. I don’t think I have learned anything in literature during those years. Blame my memory not my teachers. But I decided to watch the film not to learn about old English literature but because of Robert Zemeckis. He directed two of my favorite films- Forrest Gump and Contact. And of course, there’s the ever sultry Angelina Jolie who appeared almost nude in the film. Love the voice! “Are you the man they call Beowulf?” Hot hot hot!
Needless to say, Beowulf is a breakthrough in film. Zemeckis previously used the technology in Polar Express starring Tom Hanks.
I like the movie in general because it was able to portray a weak (not in strength but in character) hero. The Beowulf here is flawed and vain and proud like all Greek heroes are. In the end, he was able to realize the true meaning of what it should really be like to be Beowulf, to be a true hero that will be sang in songs for generations.
I love the cinematography and the operatic musical score. I love the fighting scenes especially the dragon scene. But it’s kind of disturbing to see some off movements and eye contacts of the characters. I guess it’s hard to perfect the technology just yet.

If you don’t like reading literature and you’re interested in a little nudity and some great action scenes, if you like Robert Zemeckis like I do, then go to the mall and watch Beowulf.

I remember Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, Poe’s Annabelle Lee, I remember Song of Roland and all but if you’ll ask me what they are all about, there’s the rub.
