Can you believe it? Madonna, the queen of pop has been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Yes, the material girl made it to the list.
As much as I love Madonna, I do not believe she deserves to be there. Her music is essentially pop. She has no contribution to rock music at all. She may be the queen of media, a superstar, a music magnate, a cultural icon and all that glitters, but that does not give her the credit to be inducted in the “Rock and Roll” hall of fame.
“Currently, groups or individuals are qualified for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Nominees should have demonstrable influence and significance within the history of rock and roll.” – Wikipedia
If that’s the main criterion to be inducted- “demonstrable influence and significance within the history of rock and roll“- what is she being inducted for?

If she is being inducted because of her contribution to rock and roll, her induction is a joke. If she is being inducted because of being a cultural icon, she is deserving. I am no longer sure what the “Rock and Roll” hall of fame stands for. To mention Madonna in the same breath with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan sort of makes me feel like I’ve got a peach pit caught in my throat.
but the definition of “rock and roll” is pretty vague. i say, rock on Madge! hihi.
An interesting question. The floodgates have been opened by many that have been recently been inducted. Madonna, Run DMC, Leonard Cohen are all very questionable as are many others. That these “artists” were inducted ahead of Link Wray, Genesis, The Stooges, Dick Dale, The Sonics, Davie Allan etc. should seriously bring the nominating process into question. Perhaps the nominating committee needs to have what is/was Rock and Roll redefined for them. Soon it will be more of an honor to not be inducted than it is to be inducted!
